How can I sign my child up for swim team?

Tryouts are required for new swimmers before they can register for the team.  Tryouts will take place during the first week of the new school year.  Please watch for informative posts in the Parish and School bulletins starting in June 2017.

Who can join the swim team?

The St. Mel Swim Team is open to registered St. Mel Parishioners and students of St. Mel School, ages 4-14.

My child is new to swimming.  Will they have fun?

Absolutely!  Swimmers participate at all skill levels.  Our goal is for EVERY swimmer to feel a sense of accomplishment and success!  The team has fun sitting together at all the meets and cheering each other on!  Organized team events include ice cream treats following swim meets, pizza parties, and an end-of-the-year awards dinner.

What swimming skills are required for tryouts?
Swimming basic freestyle (front crawl) is the minimum requirement needed to compete on the St. Mel Swim Team.  Swimmers must be able to confidently swim across a 25-yard pool, breathing to the side, without stopping or requiring assistance.
Children who are skilled at backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly will be asked to demonstrate those strokes during tryouts, as well.
4-8 year olds will compete in 25-yard events, and 9-14 year olds will compete in 50-yard events at the swim meets.
Are there any fees to join the swim team?

Yes.  There is a non-refundable $25.00 registration fee per child, per year.  The entry fee for swim meets range from $12.50 - $23.00 dependent on number of events entered.  We also ask that all swimmers purchase a team swimsuit and t-shirt to wear at the meets.

Where can my child train?

While practice is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended.  Please refer to the “Places to Swim” tab for suggestions of where to train. It is important to start swimming as soon as possible to be better prepared for tryouts and for the swimming season!  Please note that costs for swim club and stroke lessons are your responsibility.

How many swim meets are there in a season?

There are (4) swim meets in our season, scheduled on Sundays between September and November.  Swim team members must commit to swimming all (4) meets.

Where are the swim meets?

All swim meets take place at the San Fernando Regional Pool in San Fernando, CA.

Can I get volunteer hours for helping out the swim team?

Yes!  Parent volunteers are extremely important to the success of our swim team!  A parent from each family is expected to participate as a timer for a short duration at every meet.  And most importantly, we will need every family to volunteer to help run the St. Mel hosted swim meet.  Parent volunteers must be Virtus Trained.  Info on upcoming certification classes is available at the Parish Center.

Will my child win an award?

Yes!  Awards are given for the swimmers achieving 1st through 12th place in each event.  Heat winners are also awarded during the meets.  EVERY participating member of the team is rewarded with a trophy at the season-end awards dinner.
