Older Adult Services & Intervention System (OASIS) is a Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. program operating through the Guadalupe Community Center in Canoga Park, CA. The program began in 2003 as a comprehensive pilot ministry of social services for seniors, 65 years and older, and is supported by St. Mel volunteers.
What is OASIS?
The purpose of OASIS is to help seniors remain independent as long as possible and avoid institutionalization by matching a trained volunteer with a senior in need. We offer assistance to all older adults, regardless of race, religion, or income level. Any older adult 65 years and older who lives independently is eligible. OASIS cannot provide service to seniors in a residential or assisted-living facility.
What services are provided?
OASIS parish volunteers are friendly visitors who help with everyday activities like shopping, reading mail, errands and getting to the doctor.
Who can volunteer?
Any trustworthy, mature adult may become an OASIS volunteer. Volunteers are matched on an as needed basis but most visit their client regularly, usually once a week.
What are the qualifications for an OASIS volunteer?
The main qualifications are
- a desire to serve
- good listening skills
- respect for older adults
- willingness to abide by ethical guidelines
Is there any training?
Volunteers are trained, screened, and cleared with a background check. Volunteers also receive training on a variety of issues that consider the vulnerability of the clients they serve. Ongoing support is provided.
