Detention Ministry is perhaps one of the most personally rewarding ministries offered at St Mel. Our volunteers visit the incarcerated adolescent children at juvenile hall. Studies have shown that these individuals are most open to positive changes in their lives; but they do not know where to begin. Many of them come from broken or dysfunctional homes and have not had the opportunity to benefit from the wisdom and guidance of a caring and compassionate adult. Our volunteers meet with the children (mostly teenagers) on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings (optional). Visits last an hour except for Sunday when there is also an opportunity to attend Mass with the children. Visits focus on the discussion topics that are of the greatest importance to the individual youths. Unfortunately on any given day, there are more children requesting visits than there are volunteers. Contact: Frank Hules 818.222.6107
