St. Mel Swim Team FAQs
The St. Mel Swim Team has been part of the San Fernando Valley Catholic Swim League since 1968.
How can I sign my child up for swim team?
Tryouts are required for new swimmers before they can register for the team. Tryouts will be hosted in August 2019 (Date TBD), at Birmingham High School. For detailed information on what to expect at tryouts, please review "Tryouts for New Swimmers".
Who can join the swim team?
The swim team is open to both registered parishioners and students of St. Mel, ages 5-14.
My child is new to swimming. Will they have fun?
Absolutely! Swimmers participate at all skill levels. Our goal is for EVERY swimmer to feel a sense of accomplishment while participating on a team sport. Swimmers have fun cheering each other on at meets and taking part in team-building events. Families are always included!
What swimming skills are required for tryouts?
Swimmers will make the team if they can demonstrate basic freestyle (front crawl), breathing to the side, without stopping or requiring assistance, and be able to swim MULTIPLE 25-yard laps under the direction of a coach. Swimmers who are skilled at backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly will be asked to demonstrate those strokes, as well.
5-8 year olds will compete in 25-yard events at the swim meets. 9-14 year olds will compete in 50-yard events at the swim meets, with an option to swim the 100-yard Individual Medley.
Are there any fees to join the swim team?
Yes. There is a non-refundable $35.00 registration fee per child, per year. Entry fees for each of the swim meets range from $15.00 - $31.00 depending on number of events entered. Team swimsuits and other uniform items are available for order at the beginning of the season, but are not mandatory.
Where can my child train?
Practice is strongly recommended to be competitive. Because St. Mel does not have a pool for team practice, our swimmers have been invited by local club teams to practice along with them. Please note that costs for swim club and/or stroke lessons are your responsibility. Please refer to "Places to Train" for our suggestions. It is important to start swimming as soon as possible to be better prepared for tryouts and for the swimming season!
How many swim meets are there in a season?
There are (4) swim meets in our season, scheduled on Sundays between September and November. Swim team members must commit to swimming all (4) meets.
Where are the swim meets?
All (4) swim meets take place at the beautiful San Fernando Regional Pool Complex in San Fernando, CA.
Can I get volunteer hours for helping out the swim team?
Of course! Parent volunteers are extremely important to the success of our swim team! Parents are required to participate on the timing line for a short period during every meet, and to commit to at least one hour of service at the Annual St. Mel Swim Meet. Parent volunteers need to be Virtus Trained. Info on upcoming certification classes is available at the Parish Center.
Can my child win an award?
Yes! In addition to heat-winner prizes, custom medals are given for the swimmers achieving 1st through 12th place in each individual event, and team relays are awarded 1st through 3rd place.
At the League Championship Finals, the top 12 swimmers in each age group are presented with a High Point Award in a special awards ceremony.
EVERY participating member of the team is presented with a trophy at the end-of-season awards dinner for points they helped to earn for the St. Mel Swim Team.
